Making your home safe for ageing parents

Most falls among older people happen at home, often in familiar places like the bathroom or the stairs. A few small changes can lower the risk a great deal, and most cost very little.

Bathroom

  • Fit grab bars beside the toilet and in the shower
  • Use non-slip mats inside and outside the shower
  • Add a shower chair and a handheld shower head
  • Keep the floor dry and clear of buckets and pails

Floors and stairs

  • Remove loose rugs or tape them down firmly
  • Keep walkways clear of cables, shoes and clutter
  • Install handrails on both sides of the stairs
  • Mark step edges with bright tape if eyesight is poor

Lighting

Good lighting prevents many trips. Add night lights between the bedroom and bathroom, and keep a light switch or lamp within reach of the bed.

"Walk through the house at night with the lights low. You'll quickly see where the risks are."

Everyday items

Move things they use often to shelves between waist and shoulder height, so there's no need to climb or bend low. A sturdy chair with armrests makes it easier to sit and stand.

If your parent has already had a fall, ask their doctor or a physiotherapist for a home safety assessment.
